Solutions

The battle against gender inequality continues today, however there are definitely ways in which we can work to put this war to rest. In order for equal treatment to be achieved, there are many areas in our society that must be targeted and tackled individually.

  • The workplace

The work place is an area in which gender inequality cannot be ignored. Women everywhere are being denied their right to equal pay and treatment. If these areas practice strict enforcement against this discrimination, with harsh penalties if violated, the workplace can become a safer and more enjoyable environment for women.

  • The public

As mentioned in an earlier post, although laws can quickly change, attitudes take longer. The past is unchangeable; however, we can utilize the past as an example of what we don't want. The present, is what needs to be modified and the future is what needs to be gelled. If we can change the way society approaches gender differences, we can change the way females are negatively regarded.  But in order to change the way society views women, the source of origin must be targeted: the media has to change what it puts out for the world to see, and how women are portrayed.

  • The Media
In my opinion, the media has an extremely large influence on how today's society thinks and acts. What people view on television, in movies, on the radio, and via magazines influence each person's views. I think it's extremely important to ensure that the media is no longer allowed to have women portray stereotypical roles in which they are degraded. Also, sexist and gender biased comments should be monitored and censored. If these negative attributes are removed from our every day television the idea of gender inequality won't continue to be normalized, if society doesn't see examples of it every day.

  1. Hi Emily,

You presented some really great solutions! If a female worker believes she is being discriminated against, is there a way for her to assert her opinion? And if there are rules against gender discrimination, how is it possible that men are still receiving higher wages, etc, than women? Do they come up with 'excuses' or cite other reasons that their male employees are better off?

  2. According to Mail Online, there are a few main reasons why men get paid more money for doing to the same job as women. First off, they suggest that men are more likely to rise to a challenge and that the "nature/nurture" stereotype comes into play; women are more subject to "female roles" in the workplace, leaving them with less salary than the men who rise to the challenge. Also, according to about.com, women in the workforce are less likely to work full-time and are more subject to leave work for longer periods (maternity leave etc.) ultimately contributing to the wage gap between women and men.

  3. Your post presented some very interesting. Are there any specific methods to remedy the sexism found in the general public? As from my understanding, it requires a lot of work to eliminate the sexism that are present in the media, however, by censoring them, the freedom of speech becomes a problem as with all censorship related topics. Do you think there are solutions which won't cause much of a social issue?

  4. Yes. I think the biggest thing that should be "censored" is the objectification of women as sexual objects. Everything else, like the role of a housewife or more feminine roles on television can easily be fixed by de-stereotyping. I feel that if we teach our younger generations about equality among genders and that there is no superior or inferior sex, they will grow up in a society where it no longer exists. I think much of the discrimination comes from older generations who have this idea ingrained into them from what they saw in their childhood.
